June – July 2024

How are you and how do you generally look back on the last month?

I am doing very well and on track with regards to my research work plan. Looking back at the last six months has been humbling because the postgraduate journey can be challenging, especially at this level and at this point in the process. Self-motivation and determination are important for making sure to meet deadlines and remain consistent in the write up of the thesis as well as data collection.

What did a typical day at university look like and how did the scholarship help you cope better?

At this phase of the research process, a typical day involves lots of research in disability and gymnastics and writing. For data collection, this also includes communication with participants of the study to ensure that they are comfortable with every step of the process as my topic involves participants with disabilities.

What special experiences or events in Cape Town were you able to enjoy thanks to the scholarship?

Thanks to the scholarship I have been able to take part in many projects with the UNESCO Chair for Sport, Development, Peace and Olympic Education which have further developed my skills in capacity building, research, teaching, project coordination and media. This includes the Olympic Values Education Programme as well as the Case for Sport Research. I have been able to participate in various programmes across the campus in student development and support and career guidance as well as speak on a panel with the topic of “The Journey to Employability Through Postgraduate Studies”

How has the scholarship influenced interactions and relationships with fellow students and faculty?

I am able to inspire my fellow peers to undertake postgraduate studies by sharing information to scholarship and bursary opportunities, as funding can be a barrier for most and a reason to not continue with postgraduate studies.

What long-term goals do you have for your academic and professional future, and how does the scholarship support you on this path?

I fully intend to pursue a PhD with a research focus on inclusion of persons with disability and sport and mental health. I hope to formalise the sport of gymnastics for persons with disabilities and to increase access to sporting opportunities for persons with a disability. The scholarship allows me to focus on making my dreams a reality for my academic and professional career.
